- wumpus 4y agoIt's right there at the start of that section: > The term "affirmative action" was first used in the United States in "Executive Order No. 10925",[17] signed by President John F. Kennedy on 6 March 1961, which included a provision that government contractors "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and employees are treated [fairly] during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin".[18] It was used to promote actions that achieve non-discrimination. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Executive Order 11246 which required government employers to "hire without regard to race, religion and national origin" and "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, color, religion, sex or national origin."[19] You asked for: > is there other form of affirmative action that are not : - just a type of quota to give preferential treatment to a group of people not because of merit but simply as a way to increase diversity for some arbitrary measurement (gender, race ...) Are you asserting that treating people fairly (what JFK said) is somehow not "because of merit"? If so, there's the difference of opinion I was recommending you learn about.
- skyde 4y agono I mean in practice how is “treating people fairly” implemented. I only seen 2 versions. 1-Diversity quota 2-lawsuits against the company for not hiring you. everything you quoted just say “be nice” but doesn’t describe the mechanism that can be used to increase fairness.
- wumpus 4y agoAh. I had no idea that's what you meant. I don't know about you, but my companies have never had a quota, and have never been sued, and, had more diverse employees than our peer companies. Maybe you can explain how we did that? It's almost as if, in practice, JFK's idea worked for us.
