My mom knows I'm a software & hardware engineer, but I'm not sure she knows too much beyond that. My dad is also a hardware & software engineer, and I've long been a little disappointed at how little interest my mom has taken in what he does. I'm also often surprised how often (non-tech-industry) friends have thought I "work for Apple". I do Mac & iOS development but have never worked for Apple. One friend in particular honestly couldn't wrap his head around how I made iOS apps but didn't work for Apple.
