Given what I know about the cultural revolution, struggle sessions, etc. I think there's a burning desire in the CCP to develop and refine methodology to fix dissidents so they no longer cause trouble. The malleability of the human mind and belief systems is something they seem to be fascinated with as a sort of twisted science project.
