Wave did their marketing push when it was invite-only. The invites were going for $50-$100 on eBay. A lot of people like me weren't rich or well-connected enough to try it if they wanted. It went on like that for ten months, then with very little fanfare they opened it to everyone. I didn't find out they finally made it generally available until three months later when they said they were shutting it down due to lack of interest. I'd say there wasn't a lack of interest, there was a bumbling misalignment of its hype cycle and its availability.
