Budgets. $500k was enough for dev and marketing of a licensed Nintendo GBA title circa 2004. But the return was higher probability, if the game was high quality, popular IP. Now, you could produce an indie VR title for approx $100k. And expect a return in $1M gross sales. But it probably requires more luck. Marketing to a niche, or popular IP. It's just kinda the fragmentation of the channels. How folks divide attention now. And skyrocketing costs of specialized industry talent: environment art, gpu shader programming, metahumans etc ;)

- ArtWomb 4y agoHoly guacamole, even I didn't expect these numbers! I'd say $25M well spent, and those old nintendo reveals still hold up ;) In the United States alone, the game had generated $595,000,000 (equivalent to $1,230,000,000 in 2021) in revenue for Nintendo by early 1992,[20] exceeding the gross revenue of the films E.T. (1982), Batman (1989) and Jurassic Park (1993) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._3#Sales https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._3#Sales
