That was no were close to true back in the day.
- burntoutfire 4y agoNot a perfect comparison, but Microsoft has higher revenue that entire video games industry across the globe (not perfect, because MS also has some game dev revenue, and is also selling hardware and consulting, so not all of its money come fron non-games software).
- majani 4y agoHe probably meant that games dwarf the rest of the entertainment industry now.
- ido 4y agoAlso more than music, movies and books.
- bluescrn 4y agoBut it's incredibly hit-driven and while the biggest hits rake in billions, the majority of games make a loss, especially indie games. The market is becoming incredibly tough with so much high-quality entertainment available for very little money via Game Pass, PS Plus, Steam sales, indie bundles, etc. And that's ignoring the F2P side of things.
- maccard 4y agoTo be fair, the vast majority of games on steam, iOS and Android are shovelware and asset flips. The barrier to entry to publishing on these platforms is $99, so it's not surprising that the majority are not profitable. There's only so many times I will play a passion project 2 person metroidvania with roguelike mechanics before I start to look for something else.
