Why Still 80 Columns?
- simonblack 4y agoI personally think that 80 columns is not quite enough in today's world. Having said that, I feel that 80 is a good compromise between displays that are too narrow, (I grew up in a world where displays were as narrow as 32 columns) and displays that are too wide (132 columns can be unwieldy). No matter which number we settle on, it won't be suitable for everybody. So let's use a reasonable common denominator that is also currently a world standard and leave it there for stuff that needs to be widely used. There's nothing stopping us from using other numbers in our personal systems. (I like about 110)
