I'll happily share my indicators with people I communicate with regularly, it can be extremely useful to know if a message that's time-sensitive but doesn't require a response was seen ("grab milk too"). I sure as heck don't want to for most public-ish comms though. And I am entirely fine telling people that "I enable it for ~5 people and you are not one of them".
