Smartphones will kill off the DSLR within three years says Sony
- rektide 4y agoDSLR is basically dead, but Sony has been the force-to-beat for mirrorless digital cameras. It's weird weird weird to hear them proclaim the camera market is passing on, but maybe there's just some nuance about DSLR vs mirrorless that's lost here. Right now there's zero chance phones are going to kill off cameras. There's a ton of ultra-impressive computational-photography phones do that shooters dont, and progress in the camera realm has been ultra slow, but there's still such a marked & vast difference in quality that this seems facetious. The physics doesn't back the claims here. On the other hand: > Interestingly, Sony also expects the sensor size in "high-end model" phones to double by 2024. That'd be interesting to see! It feels like phones have just not had the will to improve their actual sensors, lately. Things don't seem to be going the right direction for cellphones. I'm still rocking a Galaxy S9, and it had a pretty ok sensor with a 2x optical zoom. But increasingly it feels like zoom or quality telephoto sensors are relegated to the flagship lines. I've had a hard time finding an upgrade for this phone I paid ~$150 for, because modern phones, except at the very high end, seem less competent, less versatile. The market keeps trying harder to push us towards more expensive devices, and, imo, there's a very real blowback with newer devices being increasingly less competitive than past devices.

- m463 4y agoThis isn't super specific, but it implies phone cameras will replace everything. But I think there are lots of dedicated cameras that will survive. Similar to phone cameras, there are lots of fascinating dedicated lens cameras, like the nikon p1000 with a 3000mm equivalent lens, or waterproof cameras. And interchangeable lens cameras are still interesting, especially fun mirrorless cameras like the canon M and R series. One point to make is that camera bodies come and go, but lenses last a long long time. So maybe DSLRs will drop off, but like film bodies, the bodies will continue to evolve and the lenses will survive for decades.
