Joe Polchinski’s “Memories of a Theoretical Physicist”
- mananaysiempre 4y agoThis is Woit’s blog post about the (just-released) memoir, and while he’s respectful and graceful, he spends most of it rehashing his strong and long-standing disagreements with the (now-dead) author and the field he had worked in. Those are worth talking about, but maybe a link that discussed the book’s actual content in more depth would be better?
- iqkznnft 4y agoI know that Woit has a lot of traction on HN but I thought I'd just mention that in the theoretical physics community, Woit is widely considered a crackpot. Source: I was a professional researcher in theoretical physics, before I decided I couldn't stand the academia.
- chmaynard 4y agoAd hominem attacks (name-calling) and gossip are not welcome here. If you believe Woit is a crackpot, then at least take ownership of this remark. If you want to take issue with Woit's position on string theory, I'm sure he would be happy to engage with you on a scientific level. You can contact him at woit@math.columbia.edu.
