It's not a tutorial as such, but the Modern Perl book is up to date:
http://www.onyxneon.com/books/modern_perl/ http://www.onyxneon.com/books/modern_perl/
Unfortunately you can't create your own set of tutorials from it, and it doesn't rank highly in Google.
- Mithaldu 15y agoI'm aware of Modern Perl and recommend it for every novice, but as you mention, it is not a tutorial and thus doesn't have much to do with what the average newbie is looking for. It's also not readable on the web.
- pwaring 15y agoThere's a HTML version available (the build scripts are available on GitHub), so it could be readable on the web.
- Mithaldu 15y agoI'm sure chromatic will read this at some point. Wonder what he thinks about setting it up as a proper website.
- chromatic 15y agoIf I produce a second edition, we will publish the HTML online as a proper website.
- Mithaldu 15y agoOh well. Better than nothing i guess. :)
- chromatic 15y agoGive me a couple of weeks. You may hear a pleasant announcement.
- Mithaldu 15y agoCheers. For what it's worth: My main concern in this is that any kind of widely-used perl tutorial needs to inherently updatable by a wide group of people. Modern Perl would make the cut because it's hosted in Git and a website could easily be generated from there in regular intervals.
- gtani 15y agoEffective Perl is also terrific. I spent a lot of time reading first edition. One of the problems is Google won't let you filter for tutorials from last, say 2 years. There's lots of solid tutorials for 5.10 and up
- pwaring 15y agoGoogle will let you filter searches by date, it's there under the More Search Tools -> Custom Range option. If I choose Last Year, I don't see most of the Perl 4 stuff. The problem is that people looking for a basic Perl tutorial may not know about all the filtering options.
- Mithaldu 15y agoYou're right in that it is not the right search, but as i said on Reddit about this: What people should search for is immaterial. For us in the perl community, only what people do search for counts.
- majika 15y agoIt's one hell of an ugly link, but: http://www.google.com.au/search?q=perl+tutorial&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a#q=perl+tutorial&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=IFa&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aunofficial&prmd=imvns&sa=X&ei=lLCoTrfCAYPQrQf9pcCXCQ&ved=0CBIQpwUoBg&source=lnt&tbs=cdr:1%2Ccd_min%3A1%2F1%2F2009%2Ccd_max%3A&tbm=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=7735dccd5d7d5c59&biw=1366&bih=655 http://www.google.com.au/search?q=perl+tutorial&ie=utf-8...
- zura 15y agoI'd also recommend the Higher-Order Perl book: http://hop.perl.plover.com/book/ http://hop.perl.plover.com/book/
- Mithaldu 15y agoIt's a good book, but i don't think it's good for newbies. Some parts of it still go over my head. :D
- npongratz 15y agoModern Perl's author, chromatic, offers some pretty good advice on how to learn Perl: http://www.modernperlbooks.com/mt/2011/09/how-to-learn-perl.html http://www.modernperlbooks.com/mt/2011/09/how-to-learn-perl....
