There are plenty of reasons, why it can be valuable for people coming to the company offices. But if it was not apparent before, the pandemic has shown:
- how much time is wasted in commutes
- how much productivity can suffer from too much interaction with your colleagues
- how much benefit for the performance and for your well being the flexibility of working from home brings.
- and of course, with a modern sizable company, the teams often enough are spread across different sites. If Tesla has a team in Austin and in Freemont working together, what do they care about home office?
If there is a direct work related reason to be in the office or even just the office actually being a more productive environment, one doesn't have to ask employees to come to the office. But forcing them to do so doesn't sound logical, as Spock would phrase it.
