Photography and Ikigai
- hmry 4y agoIf you want to learn more about the history of the Venn-diagram ikigai concept, I suggest this post: https://www.sloww.co/ikigai/ https://www.sloww.co/ikigai/ TL;DR it was created in 2014 when Marc Winn slotted the word "ikigai" into a pre-existing diagram about "purpose" from Andrés Zuzunaga. This article's introduction was surprisingly even-handed, most introduce it as a "Japanese concept", which it isn't really. :)
- teekert 4y agoThere has been a lot of debate here already about the origins of the word and it’s been called a “Japanism”. But personally, I don’t care, I find it a wonderful concept and leave it at that.
- slowwco 4y agoAppreciate you sharing my post, @hmry! I studied ikigai for 5+ years, and it was eye-opening to learn the truth about the concept. With a few modifications, I attempted to redesign the 4-circle viral diagram to better match the truth (a big part of it was removing the mandatory aspect of money and instead making it an optional byproduct of your purpose). Here's what I came up with: https://www.sloww.co/ikigai-ebook/ https://www.sloww.co/ikigai-ebook/. All the best, Kyle
- totetsu 4y agoI always find this guy's version of Tokyo very 90's make believe.
- derbOac 4y agoI've become convinced I have no ikigai, the circles don't overlap for me in the way that's assumed.
- teekert 4y agoOr, you have yet to find it. Perhaps it is an unknown unknown for you. My tip would be to walk the footsteps of a stranger because "If you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll learn things you never knew you never knew."
- sound1 4y agoProbably you need a new Venn diagram :-) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OS8lt3zC9HM https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OS8lt3zC9HM
- buf 4y agoI enjoy the concept of Ikigai, but I think it's appropriate for most people to start with Money and then work your way into other categories, otherwise they might be innaccessible: https://siliconvict.com/articles/1-choose-money-first https://siliconvict.com/articles/1-choose-money-first

- helloworld11 4y agoGood photographer and good compositions. I expected some of the usual insipid travel blog photographic garbage with its typically pervasive lack of minimal composition or framing effort (I've seen more than a few post their links to such on HN comment threads about photography), but I was nicely surprised.
- anta40 4y agoIn the context of photography, I have no idea how to answer this point: "...doing good in the world" Probably no need to be Ikigai. As long as I'm happy with my work, then it's more then sufficient.
