My college fight song has a call-and-response section where the band drops out and the crowd spells out the name of the mascot. The crowd hears their own section yell in time to the band and then everything else just kind of seems like an echo of themselves. To the band on the field, each letter comes back about 3/4 of a beat (375ms) late and much louder than the band itself.
