Matrix was still a part of Amdocs and basically not a thing beyond a protocol and a WebRTC demo When RocketChat was created.

Well, matrix is from 2014, rocketchat from 2015. I don't know if matrix was this popular and mature in 2014 to adopt it to build a business around it.
