Scaleway price 'harmonization' (mostly increases)
Just received this via e-mail - no mention on it on their blog:
---------
Scaleway invests heavily to build efficient data centers and reduce our environmental footprint, and the best example is our Eco-AZ in Paris, PAR2, which has the lowest PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) in Europe. This is particularly important as we all observe a sharp and sustained increase in electricity costs in the recent months which we have to reflect, at least partially, in our prices.
To simplify our pricing and encourage the use of our more efficient data centers, we will be harmonizing the pricing of our Instances across our regions. This means that the prices of Instances located in AMS1, PAR1, and WAW1 will be increased, and align with the prices of PAR2, which will remain unchanged. The only exception remaining is PAR3, our unique DC located in a nuclear shelter. However, to encourage the use of this highly secure AZ and benefit from the full Paris Region, we will drop its pricing significantly.
With this price change, our compute Instances will be the same price in almost all our Availability Zones (except PAR3, repositioned at a lower price). This change fully supports a multi-AZ strategy, which is key to building more resilient infrastructures. You can now spread your workload without being constrained or concerned by AZ location and expand easily in all our regions.
As of July 1, 2022, the following price changes will be automatically applied to all affected services active on that date:
- The price of compute Instances located in AMS1 and PAR1 will be increased by 8% - The price of compute Instances located in WAW1 will be increased by 3.85% - The price of compute Instances in PAR2 will not change - The price of compute Instances located in PAR3 will be decreased by 50%
This concerns all Instance types: VC1, VC2, Stardust, Start1, Pro1, Development purpose (DEV), General purpose (GP), Enterprise (ENT).
The prices of our other products will remain unchanged.
We would like to thank you for your loyalty and support over the years, as well as your understanding concerning these price changes. If you have any further questions or concerns regarding this price increase, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best wishes,
The Scaleway team.
- porker 4y agoWhy decrease the price for a highly secure AZ by 50%? Something doesn't seem right here...
- gnfargbl 4y agoCurrently, a GP1-S instance in PAR3 is 3.3x the price of PAR1. After these price changes, it will "only" be 1.5x as expensive. I'm not sure whether this will be enough to have the desired effect of increased PAR3 utilisation. The problem for SCW is that although they might be able to see that their PAR3 DC is uber-cool and amazing compared to PAR1, from the customer's point of view there's really little difference... so why not just select the cheapest?
- everydaypanos 4y agoDuring the deflationary two year COVID pandemic they made zero price reductions. If I remember correctly they even removed C1 instances thus increasing the price of their “cheapest” option from ~€3 to ~6€. Today, all the “cost savings” that were supposedly made during the deflationary era are gone and we have to “adjust” again to even higher prices.
- arinlen 4y ago> If I remember correctly they even removed C1 instances thus increasing the price of their “cheapest” option from ~€3 to ~6€. I went ahead and checked Scaleway's pricing[1] and indeed their cheapest "development instance" is €0.01/hour, which translates to over €7/month. Meanwhile, Hetzner offers a slightly beefier instance type at €0.0065/hour, €4.15/month, and at €0.0095 you can get an instance type that comes with twice the RAM [2] [1] https://www.scaleway.com/en/pricing/ https://www.scaleway.com/en/pricing/ [2] https://www.hetzner.com/cloud https://www.hetzner.com/cloud
- daneel_w 4y agoI miss the C1. I was very happy with it from a technical perspective, less happy about their staff rarely updating the enforced boot script setup, letting them run on old outdated kernels. The official reason for decommissioning them was hardware instabilities, same reason they gave for ending their Arm64 offering. I ran a C1 server for 3.5 years and an Arm64 VPS for 1 year without a single problem.
- actually_a_dog 4y agoThere has been no deflation since 2019. Inflation rates were 2.3 and 1.4% respectively during 2019 and 2020. https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/ https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-infl...
- outime 4y agoI recommend LowEndTalk & LowEndBox to find cheaper providers if one wants to have some VPS to play around.
- christophilus 4y agoThat’s where I found Netcup. Hasn’t let me down.
- 0des 4y agoFor some things a value provider is okay but it only takes one CloudAtCost promotion that gets you to pay 150 bucks for a "VPS for Life" to shit in the pool of optimism. CaC you got me. Of course it is "life of the machine" which might only be a few months. Silly me.
- PedroBatista 4y agoSo their Stardust offering has been too good for their clients huh? Only appears in 1 or 2 datacenters and always unavailable since launch.. also their marketing dept. talks a good game with "real-talks" about everything tech and social but they've made it real difficult to know about the price in €/month, like 99% of their customers use price/hour to make their buying decisions..
- miyuru 4y agoStardust is €0.09 per month without IPv4. its basically free.
- em500 4y agoI managed to get one in AMS1 more than a year ago, without IPv6. It varies between €0.44 and €0.46 per month. But like the parent mentioned, it's pretty much permantently "temporarily out of stock". (I've checked about once or twice every month for over a year, ever since I got my one an only instance.)
- lode 4y ago> Only appears in 1 or 2 datacenters and always unavailable since launch. Tip: After deleting the Stardust instance I had since launch, I indeed wasn’t able to launch another one via the web interface (always showed up as unavailable). However, via the CLI I immediately could start one in both regions where they are available.
- bsnal 4y agoWhen an email, letter, speech, etc starts talking about ecology and sustainability I know it’s going to cost me more money and/or I’ll be forced to use inferior products.
- daneel_w 4y agoAnother one? It wasn't that long since the last increase.
- wut42 4y agoThe only thing they can make scale is their pricing, I guess! :)
- rawoke083600 4y agoI really like Scaleway, and have been using them for a few years now. I just wish they would upgrade/change their UX ! It looks like a bumblegum-birthday-party for a 12 year old ! Otherwise than the crappy UI, their service are really good from what I have experienced in the last few years.
- thisisjasononhn 4y agoLooks like S3 storage prices are unaffected... for now. C14 is just too convenient.
- Hawpe 4y agoOver the last 5 years my small DEV1-M instance has increased from 3.49€ per month to between 17 and 20€ per month. Unbelievable. I'm just going to move everything back on my homeserver, that's just crazy for a 40 GB NVME instance.
