The post-war period (la trente glorieuses, if you pardon my horribly mangled French) was a time of rapidly improving living standards, both due to the end of wartime rationing and rapid economic growth, and general societal optimism. So there is some reason behind that yearning. And of course, how convenient that people with first hand experience of the time period and able to offer comments that it wasn't all roses, are either dead or retired from public life.
