People that trash deep learning as a path to AGI are doing a massive disservice to the field. Deep learning excites people. It has consistently led to surprising progress that a logic system couldn't even get close to. Deep learning is without a doubt going to play a major role in any human level AI system in the future so it's foolish to dismiss it. The more people we have working on deep learning that have the goal of AGI, the better. With the latest work out of OpenAI, DeepMind, etc... I do not forsee another AI winter at all. The last AI winter was caused due to AI not creating anything monetizable. The latest work they have revealed has shown there is a lot of value to be had, therefore the funding will not dry up a gain. Without focusing on making something useful with deep learning, you'll just become a keyboard philosopher or make GOFAI systems with no potential.
