Show HN: Cryptyles – A puzzle game about crypto currencies
- WhiskasTheCat 4y agoHi HN! I made a puzzle game about crypto currencies: Cryptyles. The goal is to match coin names and logos. The game is more about deduction than about knowing all the coins (which nobody does). New puzzles are available daily in a Wordle-like fashion. If you're struggling with a particular puzzle, you can use Hacks at the cost of energy. Energy is only regained by winning games without hacks, so it has to be used wisely. Currently it has 3 modes with varying difficulties and in the future I want to expand the game with more modes and features. The third mode you unlock is the most interesting: There, random daily anomalies change up the gameplay and make the game more challenging, providing a fresh experience every day (I hope). A major goal of mine is to not only make the game fun but also educational. At the end of a game you can click on coins to view more information about them. I will expand on the educational aspect in the future. I'd love to hear any kind of feedback! Do you find the difficulty fair? Did you encounter any bugs or issues? What kind of features would you like to see in the future? Thanks!

- can16358p 4y agoLovely! While I could get a few of the big names, getting the rest right was quite hard for me.
- WhiskasTheCat 4y agoThanks for giving it a try! Yeah I still need to collect more feedback on the difficulty. In the first mode the coin pool is limited to more well known coins. In the other modes it's unlikely that the player knows most of the coins and they have to rely on deduction and experience. The difficulty also greatly depends on which coins are drawn each day. Some logos are much easier to match than others. After I have more data on this I will make some adjustments, because I really want this game to be winnable by anyone while still providing harder challenges for the players who seek it.
- can16358p 4y agoI think you're on the right track. BTW even when I don't win, I'm learning something in a gamified manner so I don't have problem with losing too. Keep up the good work!
- WhiskasTheCat 4y agoThanks for the kind words! Learning something new even when losing is how it should be. I will expand on this in future updates.
- can16358p 4y agoAnother small thing: on today's coins some of the logos were barely distinguishable from the background color of the square (I'm on iOS (iPhone screen). Tried both dark and light mode, same). Some different color/slight shadow/or a solid background might do the job.
- WhiskasTheCat 4y agoYeah I know about that issue and will try to fix it. It's not that simple though and I cannot make the background one solid color, because there are very bright coin logos too and ones with different gray levels. I also don't want to remove the glass effect of all tiles. Shadow could work but might be too performance intensive to do in real time as the images can be somewhat large (in their original pixel size). Will need to test that. I might need to analyze the brightness of the images in code and then pick a solid background color if they are too dark. By the way, I released an update today that among other things has an easier difficulty setting on the home screen, in case you find the default one too hard. Edit: Just released a quick & dirty fix until I find a more permanent solution: Tile background color now becomes solid when a tile is selected. Some logos like the 2 dark ones today are better visible then but it won't work for all logos.
- Komodai 4y agoTried it, could barely get any of the random ones. How would I be able to guess a $0.03 $2mil market cap token?
- WhiskasTheCat 4y agoThanks for trying it out! As I wrote in my other comment, the game is more about deduction and method of elimination in the harder difficulties, though crypto experience certainly helps. For example, the coins I was able to match in today's Moon Mines were: 1. SOLAPE Token: Logo had an ape on it 2. BarnBridge. Logo looked like a building, no other coin names were building-related 3. Wault USD: Logo had W and a $ sign. 4. Deblox: Logo had D and X in it, only coin that had these letters 5. Litecoin: Knew that one The rest I figured out just with probability and lucky guesses, e.g. there's one "B" logo that had to be either BITToken or Bitcoin Subsidium. That was my thought process anyway. Thanks for the feedback! I'm still tuning the difficulty and will make adjustments.
