MIT Says We Could Build a House with Lab-Grown Wood
- matheweis 4y agoWhy not just use structural bamboo?
- john_the_writer 4y agoFirst time I heard someone counter "Now you can order pizza with your smart phone" by saying. "I could always order pizza with my phone." Same here.. My grandpa had a green house 40+ years ago. I think we've solved growing wood/plants in a lab.
- animal_spirits 4y ago> To be clear, the researchers haven't figured out how to grow actual lab-grown wood just yet.

Just one new thing changes expectations for entire categories. Good example is food grade silicone which now covers portions of stuff from the kitchen to kids toys. Some kids toys are all silicone. Lab grown wood w custom properties and shapes would be very useful and if available in large sizes cheaply, probably very popular. I think the future holds materials that are far more advanced—-like programmable blobs of putty that put themselves in any shape, with strength they can adjust and move. Basically, what the T1000 is made of, but less menacing.
