Have a look e.g. at Soundcould how many great composers are there who are not represented by a copyright collective? These societies use most of the money collected to feed their administration and give a few famous acts even more money than they already have. The irony is that most musicians will earn significantly more if they are employed by such a company as an office clerc than if they are performing on a stage.
