Small and large seem relative. Lots of subreddits stay small and don't grow very fast because of their niche. They also manage to keep contributions at high levels, and figure out what works for amplification and moderation. Rules like no going to the original subreddit and commenting on it's linked post, or specifically calling out what disinformation is seems really only possible on smaller scales, and helpful too. Larger subreddits seem to require having a lighter side to keep things in check.
