I ended up on the Kenai Peninsula. I had bought a piece of land a while back, but due to new construction costs I ended up buying an existing home. So I still have a few (more) acres of trees down the road a ways :)
But there's not a lot of inventory as far as housing goes. I probably wouldn't recommend Anchorage - if you want the mid-size American city lifestyle, there are honestly better (and more affordable) options in the lower 48. But if you like the outdoors, there are plenty of nice towns on the road system. I hear good things about Ketchikan as well (aside from the rain).
