When I learned there was a DHS Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee a decade or so ago, I took a look at the members who were 'advising' congress on tech legislation, perhaps even writing the laws. They were a motley collection of privacy lawyers(don't assume pro-privacy lawyers), ex-industry lobbyists and a few token academics, for good measure. One of the early members that still stands out in my mind was the lead attorney for the Gator Wallet scourge. Is it any surprise our laws do the exact opposite of 'protect privacy'? What was once illegal and eschewed, is now ordinary & embraced. Like a MS exec once said to the DefCon audience (circa ~ 2003), "Surreptitious spying is all the rage! Everyone's doing it."
