The Woes of Being Addicted to Streaming
- EddieDante 4y agoYou can still buy music on CDs, especially if you're a metalhead. The artists don't get paid as much as they should, but their cut on a CD sale is still better than what they get from Spotify. Once you have the CD it's yours to use as you please; you can rip your own digital copies and put them on your phone to for convenient listening (and most bands provided printed lyrics, too.) Being "addicted" to streaming is a self-inflicted First World Problem. Stop renting your media and start buying your own copies. Also, if you buy physical copies, you're not subject to having your music censored. For example, if you listen to "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits on Spotify and compare it with the version on an old CD version of Brothers in Arms, you can hear the difference, since several uses of an anti-gay slur have been replaced with silence. I don't agree with that sort of censorship myself, especially if it was done by Spotify or the record label without the consent of songwriters Gordon Sumner and Mark Knopfler, but the decision doesn't affect me because I can listen to the original from the 1980s any time I want. Also, if you're a fan of a band like Iced Earth but think Jon Schaffer is a fucking traitor, you can buy secondhand copies of their albums. That way you get to enjoy the music, and Jon Schaffer doesn't get a dime.
