Duty can set us free
- IceMetalPunk 4y agoI stopped reading after the first few sentences, because what? "The dream of contemporary liberal culture is to be free to live a life without limits. It is to be free from all attachments and external obligations. To be free, in short, to do whatever one likes." The idea of absolute individual freedom unhindered by regulations or laws is the libertarian goal, and libertarians are very much right-wing. It's modern conservatives who don't think external rules should exist -- favoring their beliefs in the Invisible Hand of the Free Market and the morality of religion to guide ethical behavior instead. When the Republican and Democratic parties first formed, it was the other way around, but conservatives have been the "don't tell me what to do" party for a very long time. Without getting into a discussion of what beliefs are right or wrong, starting an article with a thesis statement that entirely flips the truth of who-thinks-what backwards is a huge red flag.
