One thing that’s interesting is the author talks about midlife crises at 58. That’s not midlife, midlife is something like 35-40. I started joking about midlife crises at this age at work and people get very uncomfortable and weird about it. I suppose I brought into focus the fact that we’re not as young and permanent as we might think, despite at 58 deluding ourselves into thinking that’s “midlife”. My uncle has terminal cancer and he’s 65.
- konschubert 4y agoMost people will die older than 80, so not sure why you count 40 as midlife? And I think it's fair to subtract the first 18 years, like the author does.
- cassianoleal 4y agoWorld life expectancy for males is around 71 years. If you offset the first 18 years you get a midpoint at 44.5 years old, which is a lot closer to 40 than it is to 68.
- karmakaze 4y ago"midlife crises" is not about a numerical middle, but rather a change in lifestyle that comes about from children having grown up, passing your peak at your chosen specialization, change in health, or whatever. It's when you change your major goals and priorities.
