For an idea on how badly she thought about the child stardom, she named her memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died:
> Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

- Kaze404 4y agoIt probably doesn't help either that her biggest role was a Dan Schneider show of all people.
- CamelCaseName 4y agoI'm not familiar, so I searched him up. Is this what you're referring to? > Then, in March 2018, Schneider's time at Nickelodeon suddenly ended amid allegations of verbal abuse and questionable treatment of the young stars who appeared on his shows Source: https://www.looper.com/618303/the-dan-schneider-controversy-explained/ https://www.looper.com/618303/the-dan-schneider-controversy-...
- Kaze404 4y agoThe stories surrounding Dan Schneider are mostly just rumors and allegations from children / parents of children who auditioned for his shows, so there's nothing definitive to be said. However, something that's very clear to everybody is that Dan Schneider is an obvious foot fetishist (which is normal) and on multiple occasion has tried to fulfill that fetish through children. Pretty much all of his shows (iCarly in particular has many instances of this) have scenes that include children doing "wacky" and "random" things with their feet on camera. This could probably be shrugged off if it wasn't for the time when he literally asked for fans of the show (children) on Twitter to post pictures of their feet as some kind of challenge or something. Just very creepy behavior overall.
- giraffe_lady 4y agoThat's almost certainly the minimum that he got up to. There are quite a few credible stories of sexual abuse as well. The personal cost to victims of coming forward with official allegations is very high so it's not surprising that no one really has so far.

- notacoward 4y ago> Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. This part really struck a chord with me. My mother and I moved from New Zealand to the US when I was 14. I always viewed it as her decision. She always claimed that she had let me make the decision. I don't even remember that, it would be a ridiculous decision to leave to a 14-year-old, and (most topically) even if that had all happened it wouldn't really have been my decision anyway. It couldn't have been. Ages of majority and consent exist for exactly this reason. There's no way a child that age, even a precocious one, could separate their own desires from trying to please a parent. Moving back to the US was obviously her dream not only in the moment but in the whole twelve years since she left my father. What kind of child wouldn't - both consciously and unconsciously - accommodate that? As it is, it took me at least an event-filled decade to realize that I would have chosen to stay if the decision had truly been up to me. It never was. No child, at least until mid-teens, really makes their own life decisions - except perhaps for the singular case of a child escaping abusive parents. Parents who claim otherwise are usually engaging in vicarious wish fulfillment, and always denying/abdicating their responsibility for those decisions.
