Looks like the author is a contributor to this: https://brownstone.org/ https://brownstone.org/ which was founded to be critical of the global COVID response and generally push anti-vaxx theories.

- s1artibartfast 4y agoIt is pretty clear they they are critical of the global covid response from the article title... That said it looks pretty clear from the data that Sweden did fine with its personal discretion policy. That doesn't mean the policy would have translated well to poorer or more dense than countries either though.
- pierrebai 4y agoFrom somewhere else [1]: "If you think that lockdowns, travel bans, and mask mandates were the right approach, then you probably see Sweden as failure. Unlike almost every other wealthy nation, it held off doing those things. And the result was a much higher death rate than its neighbors Norway and Denmark. Approximately 13,000 Swedes have died since the beginning of the pandemic — half of them in nursing homes. In comparison, only about 700 Norwegians have died of COVID-19." In that same article, it says Sweden "strategy surrounded physical distancing, limiting large gatherings, and staying home while you’re sick." IOW, pick your facts, pick your facts! You can have any opinion if you pick your facts. - s1artibartfast 4y agoWas this addressed to me? Im not sure how this relates to my comment. IF you are asking me to pick my fact between an analysis of verifiable deaths per capita by the WHO or a crappy KCRW article, I go with the WHO. KCRW is trying to compare countries without even thinking about the population difference. It also ignores that countries differ in when they report covid as a leading cause of death.
- zumu 4y agoI think its valuable to point out the author is likely being paid by a libertarian think tank that exists exclusively to publish and promote critical stories about COVID countermeasures. For contributing authors, the thesis that the COVID response was _morally wrong_ is pre-determined. These articles are not about analyzing the data and learning from it, but rather massaging data to back up the pre-determined thesis. It's not science, it's propaganda, funded by the right.
- s1artibartfast 4y agoMeh, I just looked at the WHO chart and it was pretty much self explanatory. you don't even need to read the rest of the article. I found it helpful because otherwise I would not have seen the WHO data.
