This article seems to misuse the word “open source”, or at least uses it in a completely new context. It would have been better for them to use the term “open information”.
Like when the article talked about the invasion of Ukraine, looking back the “open source information” we’re all the videos posted to TikTok. For us in the US and other parts of the world it was a brand new insight into a war. For the Russians it’s another intelligence angle.
- webmaven 4y ago"Open Source" in an intelligence context actually predates the software licensing context. Here is an example from 1993: https://books.google.com/books?id=zYQ4AQAAIAAJ&pg=PP3&dq=%22open+source%22&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&source=gb_mobile_search&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj_uJ_rpPr3AhWSLH0KHYwTDUMQ6AF6BAgIEAM https://books.google.com/books?id=zYQ4AQAAIAAJ&pg=PP3&dq=%22... For that reason, the term introduced by Christine Peterson in 1998 was actually "Open Source Software": https://opensource.com/article/18/2/coining-term-open-source-software https://opensource.com/article/18/2/coining-term-open-source...
