Ask HN's: has anyone relocated to Florida or Texas? What city?
If you made the move, would you recommend it to others? If so, why or why not?
- jprd 4y agoFrom where, exactly? Is this a SF thing?
- gamechangr 4y agoCould be from anywhere... So many of my friends have gone officially remote now, and that's creating a large amount of people relocating for more affordable lifestyles. I think the sun and no income taxes are enough to draw people to Texas and Florida. The problem is that they are big states and it's hard to compare. Florida is even harder to compare as there are a few different areas. For example, Miami and Tampa are not very similar at all. You would think you were in two different states. I would like to hear first person experiences and what they would or wouldn't recommend.

- b20000 4y agoi have considered florida (moving from CA) but each time i look at rent cost it is not much cheaper than in CA if you want to be by the coast (e.g. west palm beach). there are people with money there too just like in CA. the difference is you will not have the network there that you can have in CA. no taxes is an advantage.
- jcadam 4y agoThe interior of Florida can be downright miserable during the summer. You need that ocean breeze. I moved to Alaska from Florida. I like FL, but it was just getting way too crowded for me. Here I have some space :)
- b20000 4y agointeresting. i looked at juneau and anchorage but it seemed there was not much for rent and seemed to be an expensive place?
- jcadam 4y agoI ended up on the Kenai Peninsula. I had bought a piece of land a while back, but due to new construction costs I ended up buying an existing home. So I still have a few (more) acres of trees down the road a ways :) But there's not a lot of inventory as far as housing goes. I probably wouldn't recommend Anchorage - if you want the mid-size American city lifestyle, there are honestly better (and more affordable) options in the lower 48. But if you like the outdoors, there are plenty of nice towns on the road system. I hear good things about Ketchikan as well (aside from the rain).
