How is this unique? I remember doing duck 'n cover drills at school as a preteen in the 1980s and having the adults in my life tell me I needed to know the locations of all of the fallout shelters in town so I could get to the nearest one if the Cold War went nuclear. My parents couldn't (or perhaps it's better to say they wouldn't) tell me that everything was going to turn out OK. I don't think that teens today are unique in knowing the hammer could fall any time.
In the 1980s it was nuclear winter. Today it's climate change. 40 years from now it'll be something else. It's always something, and keeping young people ignorant doesn't protect their innocence; it only hampers their journey toward adulthood.
