- raxxorraxor 4y ago> The dean of the faculty insists that Mr. Katz’s politics "is not germane to the case." Clear display of intellectual dishonesty and cowardice in my opinion. Didn't Princeton have a good name in the US?
- bell-cot 4y agoRelatively, yes. But it sounds like you aren't at all familiar with how self-serving and hypocritical a normal American university is.
- bell-cot 4y agoZzzz. If any tenured professor at a modern American university actually expects his employer to play the Heroic Meat Shield part, when said professor throws rocks at the culture wars hornet nest the way that Prof. Katz did, then he needs to be checked for silent strokes and early-onset senility. Believing that tenure gives him some sort of magical Amulet of Free Speech is right up there with believing that Santa Claus brings toys to all the nice little girls and boys.
- foldr 4y agoHe admits to having had a relationship with a student and admits that this was a violation of a university rule. Seems like a pretty open and shut case to me. He also seems to have been a serial creep: https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2021/02/alumni-allegations-princeton-joshua-katz https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2021/02/alumni-all... I don't really have any problem believing that the university fired him for this rather than for some dumb thing he said.
- cato_the_elder 4y ago> having had a relationship with a student If having a consensual relationship with a student is enough for firing tenured academics, I'm afraid that you'd have to fire many. Students sleeping with professors seems to be not that uncommon. Probably more common than being gay, for example [1]. - foldr 4y agoI’d be perfectly happy for those academics to be fired, personally. But as the article I linked to explained, this goes far beyond a single consensual relationship. (And to say it’s ‘consensual’ is just to say that he’s not a rapist - big whoop. It’s still an abuse of power.) No idea what you are trying to say with the comparison to the number of people who are gay. Being gay is not a violation of any of Princeton’s policies, or of generally accepted standards of professional behavior. As a former academic who managed to avoid having sex with my students by the simple expedient of, err, refraining from doing it using the the self control skills that I learned in 6th grade, I have exactly zero sympathy for these creeps and losers who serially hit on their students.
