Coinbase reportedly testing out having employees rate each other in an app
- __derek__ 4y ago1. Open article 2. Cmd + F 3. "Bridgewater" 4. Breathe a sign of relief For those who haven't read it yet, check out Dalio's book Principles. (The audiobook is good and partially narrated by Dalio himself.) Ray's a little out there, but the book was one of the most thought-provoking things I read last year, and I regret sleeping on it for as long as I did.
- sushid 4y agoCan you elaborate a bit more on your thoughts here? Are you relieved because you think this is a good thing? Or is it only a good thing because they're leveraging Bridgewater?
- __derek__ 4y agoOh! I see how that's ambiguous. My "relief" was ironic in that I didn't feel obligated to note that Bridgewater has done this for years, and that it appears to be one of Ray Dalio's proudest accomplishments. In a world of terrifying billionaires, Dalio seems like a quirky one who's mostly harmless, and I appreciate that. I think it is an interesting concept, but a dystopian application.
- throwaway5959 4y agoDystopian. From talking to former employees at Bridgewater, I really hope this doesn’t catch on.
- fnordpiglet 4y ago“”” "My objective has been to have meaningful work and meaningful relationships with the people I work with, and I've learned that I couldn't have that unless I had that radical transparency and that algorithmic decision-making," Dalio said at the time. “”” Wow.
- throwaway5959 4y agoDoes Ray Dalio being so transactional in his relationships really surprise you?
- UncleMeat 4y agoLeave it to billionaires to turn human relationships into ruthless optimization and metrics. I feel that there is a need for the "slow food movement" for human relationships. Focus on inefficiency, subjective feeling, and love rather than metrics and efficiency.
- qgin 4y agoHearing Ray Dalio talk about the Bridgewater app always made me think of the episode of the show Community where the school starts beta testing a very similar app called MeowMeowBeanz and it turns what were informal social hierarchies into a Brave New World style caste system.
- julienreszka 4y agoIs there anybody here who thinks this is a good idea and not completely cringe? Can you explain why?
- cookingrobot 4y agoThere’s a TED talk from 2017 about this app: https://www.ted.com/talks/ray_dalio_how_to_build_a_company_where_the_best_ideas_win?language=en https://www.ted.com/talks/ray_dalio_how_to_build_a_company_w... This is presented by Ray Dalio the founder of Bridgewater Associates - that’s the hedge fund that created this app for themselves.
- egberts1 4y agoOooo, I see bad things. But that’s me, I always take the devil’s advocate approach to flesh out potentially bad things. I smell mass layoff coming up.

- 5350-uiop-1130 4y ago"In the app, employees review how well their coworkers demonstrate 10 core values at Coinbase, including things like communication and "positive energy," per The Information." This sounds horrible.
