Tesla wanted to create a field in a global shape where power could be drawn within the globe. Sadly he was defeated by the cube law as well as low efficiency RF production. This uses high speed FET mediated synchronous rectification, much like a DC generator in principal. Normal silicon diodes have the diode drop x2 in a bridge- however, if you replace the diodes with microwave FETs you can turn the arms of the bridge on/off in synchrony with the RF and get DC without diode drops, so all you need is maximizing the creation of a standing wave to get the max efficicncy. Easier with a stationary setup, from orbit there will be varying distances = departs from highest efficiency. WIth orbital solar using the best cells at ~~35% and about 80-85% RF creation, the ground station might net ~~25-35% recovered energy after a few years of optimization. Station keeping in the sun 24/7 - is that doable- perhaps in a communications orbit that stays in one spot?? = 35,000 KM away = beam spread due to lambda limits will mean a fairly large ground antenna, but if the antenna is orientable to be in the sun 24/7 - if possible at all, a workable but complex/expensive system might be made. Interesting to see how this makes out as the idea will have merit for moon/mars exploration.
