  This has been my experience as well. Grew up in Southern California and have lived most of my life west of the Mississippi, so it's possible that people on the east coast pronounce it differently. Biggest pronunciation difference I've run into even within the same communities is foyer. I've always pronounced it the French way (foy-ey) but seems like 80% of people pronounce it foy-er.
