Some Android phone manufacturers are terrible in releasing security updates. Even within the same brand different models are updated, or not, to different cadence. In my experience you are pretty much stuck with the version of Android that the phone was released with. When upgrading Android apps, they seem to be less dependent upon having the latest version of Android in order to run. At least that has been my experience. I keep all my old phones and tablets and test webapps that I write with the most recent version of Chrome that I can still load onto them.
