>Observers of the global political landscape have noted swift, drastic changes starting in the second decade of this century.
Most indicators show this started around 2009, at the latest. Slightly before social media existed, but certainly long before real proliferation.
Studies which have worked on this have showed very low correlation in blaming social media.
>Academic literature studying these trends has identified a number of factors explaining the rise of populism through both economic and cultural grievances, driven by such phenomena as automation, globalization, austerity, refugee crises, and climate change. Another important open question is whether there is something inherent in social media that makes them more likely to carry messages of an extreme, xenophobic, or populist nature.
This is studying populism as if it were bad? lol what? their failure to understand this will make conclusions basically impossible for them.
Populism is 'for the people' to not be a populist is to be an elite or bourgeois. That's anti-democratic. To be against populism is to be for autocracy. The sudden increase in populism is because we have democratic sliding toward autocracy. If these grievances aren't addressed, it will result in revolution.
>Several countries have recently adopted measures to regulate the propagation of hate speech, and many more policy proposals are being discussed.
No such thing has happened. They are adopting measures to regulate speech. The addition of 'hate' is absurd at best.
Here's the better reality.
For practically the first time in human history politicians are being instantly caught in their lies. They are being held accountable and so they went to the antiquated media to spread lies for them. Mislabeling legitimate stories like hunter biden laptop or legitimate protests as 'a bunch of deplorable white supremacists who arent white' for example. Then they are deciding to create 'disinformation governance boards' aka ministry of truth. Which didn't go well because the person who got assigned pushed alot of disinformation. They also regulated social media but they couldn't completely censor subjects as well as need to. Next step was obviously censor speech.
They unfortunately only delayed their problems. The antiquated media who spread lies are collapsing. Grievances that go unaddressed in a democracy will fester. I dont agree 2nd american civil war has started but I seem to have virtually no one agreeing with me.
Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. Social media sped up this process, we smell them far sooner.
