I think this comment thread is going wildly off the rails but I want to call out your downplayed take on this: separating children from their parents, alleged or not, is reprehensible. What part of keeping them in custody mandates that?
- whatshisface 4y agoThe United States does separate children from their parents and put them in the foster system when their parents are tried and convicted and nobody is around to take care of the kids, take that as you will. (Personally I think it is very bad and poses the question of which crimes can be awarded non-prison sentences which presently mean prison. Few people are so bad that the loss to society of incarcerating them does not go beyond the cost, which is already high, of maintaining the prisons.)
- vore 4y agoYes, that's bad too!
- coryrc 4y agoSo any dude shows up at the border, with a bunch of children, just take his word he's the parent and not a sex trafficker? Nobody has forced these people to march on the border. They're in a country offering asylum (Mexico). International rules do not, justly, require allowing economic migrants sanctuary.
- vore 4y agoWhat's the difference if you're detaining them anyway? If you're going to be supervising them in detention regardless, giving them the benefit of the doubt seems much more humane while you're sorting all of it out? Just because they won't be granted asylum doesn't mean you can treat them poorly in detention while their request for asylum is being processed.
- t-3 4y agoKeeping children with adults in prison is a bad idea for many reasons. Surely you've heard about some of the things that happen in prisons?
- ZoomerCretin 4y agoThey aren't prisons.
- t-3 4y agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_immigrant_detention_sites_in_the_United_States https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_immigrant_detention_si... The vast majority of them are.
- vore 4y agoAre you disregarding the fact that these children have been traveling with these adults before they were detained? If this is a "think of the children" argument, why do you choose to not apply it the other way as well? Do you think this was one of their reasons for family separation when they failed to reunify the children in hundreds of cases during the implementation of the policy?
- t-3 4y agoI'm not making a "think of the children" argument, I think the idea of nations and borders is idiotic in the first place. I'm making a "your argument is bad" argument.
