And that's just the currently used definitions... If I ask Google for "1 gallon in liters", it assumes Imperial gallons which would account for a good chunk of the error.

To be fair, even google gets this wrong sometimes - "1 gallon in gallons" = 1.2: https://www.google.com/search?q=1+gallon+in+gallons https://www.google.com/search?q=1+gallon+in+gallons
