Discussion of controversial issue results in people being angry at eachother and less productive - why are people trying to turn this into a way that they can be angry at Meta? There are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate them, you don't have to go creating new ones that barely make any sense.
Banning topics like religion, politics, etc. makes sense. All you're going to do discussing this is make other people angry. Nobody has ever changed their mind on abortion because someone down the hall "discussed" it with you. It does not progress any minds, it does not create anything of any positive value whatsoever. Why wouldn't they ban it?
>The same policy explicitly allows us to discuss similarly sensitive issues and movements including immigration, trans rights, climate change, Black Lives Matter, gun rights / gun control, and vaccination
I'm baffled as to why any of this was allowed in the first place. If you want to have discussions about this, do it off work. Or better yet, set aside a specific time where people can gather to talk about this face to face, instead of allowing it on your internal messaging systems.
- masonic 4y agoIf you're working at Meta, then going nonlinear about privacy issues is just hypocrisy in the first place.
- proc0 4y agoOk, and can they do that with race and gender as well? Surely whatever reason they had to be scheduling those required diversity meetings also applies to every other political discussion, at least social issues. Of course I won't be holding my breath on that one.
- necovek 4y agoWhat's up with all those "bring your whole self to work" mantras? Anyway, you ain't gonna stop people from discussing whatever they want over lunch, why is it any different over messaging systems (other than there being a "paper" trail)? I guess what you want is to hire people who simply know better than to bring these in general, public channels, but banning is totally weird.
- alexb_ 4y agoThe reason it's different is the same reason that every flame war on the internet starts - over text, you don't have any social cues, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc to fill in the context. So your brain will fill in the gaps, usually using the worst interpretation possible. It's the road rage effect.
- necovek 4y agoThat much is definitely true. Nothing beats a bit of real or at least video contact.
