The fact check admits that the claim it is debunking is actually true -- the WHO would be empowered to declare public health emergencies and, by treaty, the US would be obligated to comply with health orders.
The only reason this is "debunked" is that the WHO doesn't have an enforcement mechanism if the US were to refuse it's treaty obligation to comply with the WHO's orders.
- rntn 4y agoFrom the article : "Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University law professor and director of the university’s WHO Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law, told The Associated Press that the director-general only has the power to make recommendations, not enact laws or otherwise dictate national policy decisions. “It is utterly untrue that the IHR would interfere with health care decisions or transfer such decisions to the WHO Director-General,” Gostin wrote in an email. “The IHR amendments would ask countries to promptly and truthfully report infectious disease outbreaks, and WHO would offer assistance in managing the outbreak. But it could not force a country to allow WHO staff to interfere with its public health decision making.” .. "Dr. David Freedman, the president-elect of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, served on a WHO committee of IHR experts for a decade. He reiterated that the WHO “has zero enforcement, police or punitive powers.” “They can’t sanction a country, they can just say ‘hey you signed this treaty, you’re supposed to abide by this treaty,’” said Freedman. "
- codefreeordie 4y agoOh, yeah, the article has all of the info. It just claims to be debunking something in the headline and it actually goes on to demonstrate that the claim is basically true.
- rntn 4y agoThe article debunked the claims, and was published because those inaccurate claims were receiving widespread attention in efforts to prevent the WHO pandemic reporting protocol from advancing beyond the failures that the Chinese reporting of COVID-19 exposed. If you disagree with the article, could you please cite some sources with fact check scores in the range of the AP News as the basis for your disagreement? https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/associated-press https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/associated-press
- codefreeordie 4y agoYour post, with its citations from the article, is all the proof required. The article debunks itself.
