Gucci £1,300 umbrella ridiculed in China for not being waterproof
- mytailorisrich 4y agoIronically, the English word 'umbrella' derives from Italian and the etymology is indeed that it is to provide shade. I suspect that this is what the first ones where used for: to protect ladies' skin from the sun during their walks. The specific word for them in English is 'parasol' (which is what Gucci is actually selling here). In China parasols are popular (women do not like to tan and whiter skin is 'better' in beauty canons) and the traditional Chinese paper parasols are world famous, so it's not as ridiculous as the article makes it.
