Christ, half the teachers in the world were students themselves when sneakily changing margins slightly and upping line spacing a little and using 12.5 don't sizes was thought of (and I'm sure the handwriting generations had their own tricks). Haven't they learned yet to make their students just put the word count? It's not like that's hard: it right there in a word processor.
Also, minimum word counts are pointless. Anyone can write 5 pages, you just keep waffling. The real challenge is to do it in a limit. All university long-form assignments I can think of had a strict word limit and you'd either lose a percentage for every 100 words over the limit or even have the assignment rejected. At least half the effort was shaving off 2000 words out of a 7000 word report without losing any of the useful detail. Much as I might have complained at the time, the results were always tighter and to-the-point. Which was better for my long-term education and better for the poor sap reading 30 of them.
Then again, the obsession with forcing kids to write pages of crap is probably very good training for the world of SEO and also the world of pointless business reports that no one needs but someone still has to write them so they can be ignored.
- t_mann 4y agoI believe that in the UK at least, word limits for essays are quite common (as in, I've heard them mentioned by several people who studied there).
