Ask HN: I’m a CSE new grad with no experience. Should I negotiate an offer?
I have an offer from a small logistics company to do some software engineering. It comes with a base salary and potential for annual bonus - nothing else. I have no previous internships or professional experience or pending offers.
Given the current job market, would it be valuable to negotiate for a base increase or bonus? Or should I just accept the offer since it’s my first job out of college?
- tekno45 4y agoI've never had anyone say "No, how dare you negotiate, offer rescinded" Do it.
- anonnewgrad 4y agoYeah, I think my hesitation is present due to this job not being in the “tech” sector. It feels more old school.
- tapvt 4y agoI’ve worked in both “tech” and “tech-adjacent” roles over 20+ years. The tech-side of the equation often compensates better, the adjacent roles can have job security like you’d not believe, though it may be a bit boring. YMMV
- u2077 4y agoI’d say the easy part is deciding if you should negotiate, but do you have any tips on how to negotiate?
- mountainriver 4y agoSee if the company publishes their pay bands, get multiple offers, charm them
- treis 4y agoPeople absolutely do that. Not people you really want to work for, but OP has no other options. Take the offer, get experience, and look for your payday in a couple years at Job #2.
- stevenalowe 4y agoTake it, if it's fair enough. Then kick butt for a year and re-evaluate
- leros 4y agoYou have 100% power to negotiate if you're willing to lose the job offer. Otherwise you're gambling. For my first job, I told the recruiter "I really want to work here, but I need my pay to be 50% higher because I have another offer for that amount". I was just honest about it and they were willing to meet where I needed to get hired.
- markus_zhang 4y agoFor sure. Worst case you don't gain anything extra.
