So here's the problem with this article: nowhere does it compare the outcomes from vaccines to the outcomes from catching COVID, which is the actually relevant and important metric. Nothing is 100% safe, the question is whether getting vaccinated is safer than catching COVID. So let's do some actually relevant math:
1. If we take the numbers from the table supplied in this article as completely accurate, then 0.0051380026% of people who got any COVID vaccine had a serious adverse reaction.
2. Worldwide, there have been about 523,000,000 cases of COVID. There have also been about 6,270,000 deaths due to COVID. That comes out to 1.198852772%.
3. You may notice, then, that if you get COVID, your chances of fully dying are much higher than your chances of having any serious adverse reaction from any COVID vaccine.
4. Quote from the article: "covid vaccines have this far killed nearly 13,000 in the US." If we again assume that's 100% accurate, we can compare it directly to the number of COVID deaths in the US alone: 74,241. Nearly 6 times as many people have died from COVID in the US than from any COVID vaccine.
So, yeah, adverse reactions occur with any medicine, vaccine, or medical therapy. Sometimes, adverse reactions occur with peanut butter or dust mites or seafood. But if your goal is to reduce your chances of death, you're much better off getting a vaccine than catching COVID.
If, however, your goal is to promote fear of science and mistrust of medical experts, then sure, focus only on how many people died from a vaccine while totally ignoring how many more people died from COVID. And in that case... fuck off with your anti-science, pseudointellectual lack of empathy and responsibility.
- PaulHoule 4y agoI just saw an article that claimed that roughly 300,000 COVID-19 deaths could have been prevented in the US if everyone who could have gotten vaccinated got vaccinated. https://globalepidemics.org/2022/05/13/new-analysis-shows-vaccines-could-have-prevented-318000-deaths/ https://globalepidemics.org/2022/05/13/new-analysis-shows-va... This is 30x the number of serious adverse events. One could look at this as (1) people that chose to die, or (2) people who write blog posts like that are responsible for some of those deaths.
- IceMetalPunk 4y agoI think it's a combination of those two. "People who write blog posts (and Facebook and Twitter posts) like this are responsible for encouraging people to choose to die and kill the people around them".
- h2odragon 4y ago> while totally ignoring how many more people died from COVID. That's pretty well covered other places, tho. Perhaps not every discussion of vaccines requires apologia and protestations of faith?
- IceMetalPunk 4y agoNot every discussion does. But when your conclusion is "therefore, we shouldn't say vaccines are safe, and we should be wary about getting them", comparing them to the alternative is required, unless you're arguing in bad faith from the start.
