> City of Asylum provides safe haven to writers who have been persecuted for their literary work, so that they may live and write freely without censorship, risk of imprisonment, or threats against their lives.
> […] asylum fellows are hosted for at least two years; receives a $45,000 annual stipend, free housing, dedicated office space, legal support, and more.
I think this is a very cool idea, and pondered if there are more technology-adjacent forms of creativity that would benefit from a similar approach, but it is a bit difficult to imagine activist software developers that would benefit from this sort of patronage that would actually be safe from the Powers that Be in the United States or many of the countries in the US sphere of influence. Aaron Swartz comes to mind.
Where would the developers of something like Popcorn Time (or a generic torrent indexing and search engine, or projects analyzing various leaked or aggregated data in the public interest, or projects like SciHub or LibGen) find safe haven? Though I suppose the developers of more content-neutral projects like SecureDrop or Tor Browser may not have too much to worry about as long as the locus of annoying behavior isn't an app or service being run by the developers themselves.
Worth pondering further.
