Interstellar object CNEOS burned up in the Earth's atmosphere on Jan 8, 2014
- pyinstallwoes 4y agoInteresting that this happened in 2014. Wasn’t there an Astronomer in the 90s who predicted something out of the Oort Cloud beyond Pluto was approaching Earth? Something like it was 50 billion miles away in the 80s and then only 7 in the 90s? I can’t seem to find information on it. Seems interestingly related, especially with the following interstellar objects in 2017 and then 2019 iirc. I wonder if they are Goemboek Shape based on the ʻOumuamua description. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_object https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_object

- WalterGR 4y agoLiterally “the short duration of collected data, less than five seconds, makes it difficult to definitively determine if the object’s origin was indeed interstellar.”
- pyinstallwoes 4y agoAfter declassifying the data in April 2022,[40] the U.S. Space Command, based on information collected from its planetary defense sensors, confirmed the detection of the interstellar meteor. Then there’s the studies by Loeb and others in the more affirmative. So it makes sense the military is more hesitant to divulge specifics on accuracy as it leaks potential military capablility. U All Probably get it anyway. https://www.inverse.com/science/interstellar-meteor-2014-discovery https://www.inverse.com/science/interstellar-meteor-2014-dis...
