RISC-V needs more than an open architecture to compete
- PaulHoule 4y agoIt might not be in a "CPU on a chip" but rather in some chip that needs a CPU in addition to some other parts. For instance Western Digital is a big contributor to RISC-V. They struggle to ship drive controllers that are really relevant because frequently the CPU that goes into a drive controller is some off-brand CPU which is 5% the performance of an Intel CPU. If WD has IP for a decent CPU that can be sped up for a given task with some small changes that is a game changer... But on the other hand ARM can go a long way by lowering prices and increasing flexibility for licensing.
