I think there is a potential issue with funding/sponsorship bias leaking into the consensus of the field, as there is with any field. It's just that economics has ramifications for very core government policy in a way that most other fields don't. I agree that economists as individuals are working competently and in earnest, it's just that certain economists will find it harder to get funding than others and that could manifest as bias with potentially wide reaching implications.
